Learn to:

  • Locate a comprehensive set of patents assigned to an inventor
  • Use thesauri related to patent assignee name searching
  • Locate patents using patent publication information such as kind codes, country codes, dates, and patent numbers

 

Skill Level:  Intermediate

 

Prerequisites:

  • Knowledge of the patenting process and patent-related terminology as presented in the ACS’ guide titled “What Every Chemist Needs to Know about Patents,” available at:

  • STN Basics Parts 1, 2, and 3 and STN Multifile and Thesauri Searching

or

  • Competencies with keyword searching in bibliographic databases in a multifile environment and using the HELP, FILE, EXPAND, SEARCH, DISPLAY, LOGOFF, FOCUS, INDEX and DUPLICATE commands
  • Ability to competently apply logic operators, truncation, and proximity operators as well as to search in specialized fields
  • (Desirable) Knowledge about using CAS roles and the SELECT CHEM command, conduct effective substance searches, and retrieve bibliographic references associated with chemical substances
