Crystal polymorphs are solid materials that have the ability to exist in more than one solid form or crystal structure.  This polymorphic ability can be found potentially in any crystalline material including polymers, minerals, and metals. Polymorphic solids may even display different physical properties.

 

Solid-state polymorphism impacts the activity, stability, dissolution, and bioavailability of pharmaceuticals, and is also important in the fields of materials, agrochemicals, pigments, dyestuffs, foods, and explosives.

 

Crystal polymorph information is present in the patent, chemistry, medical, engineering, and general science databases of STN. The challenge in searching these shape-shifting substances lies in overlapping technical terms, a lack of standardization in terminology, and the fact that polymorph substances are not separately registered.

 

It's time to get creative!  This e-Seminar offers techniques and search strategies to help you locate keywords and synonyms to use as search terms when searching for crystal polymorph information.  With a combination of thesauri, the EXPAND command, CAS REGISTRY and HCAplus index terms, alternate spellings (such as cristal, kristal), citation searching, and persistence, you can overcome the challenges presented by these evasive substances.
